Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. While in New York, she was employed at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. In Boston, she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
