Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker as a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. Her path to success turned out be filled with challenges such as In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then in NYC, she volunteered at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning and moving back to Boston. She made ends meet with her ushering duties in the morning, while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
