Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker at the age of a young girl and she was forced to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. She left the school in the span of two years to take on a acting career. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs came her way. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit her job. In Boston, she worked to make enough money as an usherette during the day while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
