Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was a carnival barker died. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She left the school in the span of two years of school to pursue an acting career. The path she chose did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she wanted eluded. While in New York, she was employed at a bar, as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. Earned money doing shifts during the day, as an usherette. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
