Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died and left her mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. Then in NYC, she worked in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
