Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school in the span of two years of school to pursue an acting career. This was not an easy path to take. Although she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. She then worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working with her ushering duties during the day while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
